Electronics has come a long way since the transistor was invented in 1947 by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain. Naturally, electronics and its related computer technology have likewise advanced significantly, even in the five years since the publication of first edition of this book, “Circuit Design From The Ground Up”. Xin Yang, Len Nokes, Yufeng Wang and Xiangqian Liu have now produced this second edition and, in doing so, have updated and expanded the coverage of what is essential knowledge for every student and professional electrical engineer and computer scientist today.

The 17 chapters of this second edition begin with analogue electronics and the basic principles, proceed through topics such as radio communications and instrument design, transistors in their numerous circuit configurations, integrated circuits and sensors, and then introduce digital electronics, microcontrollers and examples of their applications.

The principal author, Xin Yang, and his colleagues have based this second edition on their wealth of hands-on practical experience. The result is a book which completely meets the needs of its readers. Recently, Xin Yang’s research has been into the study of the microvasculature using ultrasonic techniques at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, and so he is thoroughly familiar with the applications of electronics and computer technology in this important practical field. He has already published five books, including the first edition of the present volume. The others have been somewhat more specialised but all have attracted extensive readerships. The second edition of “Circuit Design From The Ground Up” deserves to be even more successful than its predecessors.

As an engineer myself, it is with the greatest possible pleasure that I commend the second edition of “Circuit Design From The Ground Up”, which I am sure will be of tremendous value both as a textbook and as a source of reference for many years to come.
